History

In 1848, The Federal Building Committee for the National Capital requested the finest stone from all 30 States. TN sent rock from Old Dougherty due to the unique red hue that comes from limestone formed near the fault line that runs through the property. The Committee was so impressed with the coloration, that they ultimately selected this rock over the other States for key rooms throughout the National Capital.

Shortly after, architects incorporated the unique stone into the Washington Monument, The Treasury Building, United States Treasury, the South Carolina State House, and various high profile buildings in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cincinnati. The quarry was ultimately shut down due to significant transportation expenses at the time. It was briefly opened in 1980 to provide stone for the World’s Fair in Knoxville TN.

It is our plan to utilize the national pride and history in the sale of Red Star stone. We believe, particularly in the decorative market, that the coloration will speak for itself, and the rock's historical significance will be a material advantage when buyers are selecting between aesthetically equivalent products.

About

Dustin Long is a 5th generation Hawkins county native. Twenty years ago, while working his way up through the aggregates business, he envisioned starting his own quarry that would allow him to share his passion for this country, this industry, and beautiful Tennessee stone. After years of working, saving, and determination, Dustin was able to acquire the land and finally start operations. Today that is Red Star.

We believe in this business, determination, Hawkins County, Tennessee, The United States of America, and the hard work and sacrifice our ancestors provided to allow us to be who we are today. We strive to continue that lineage, and are proud of our story.
